Open Arabic Periodical Editions
A framework for open, collaborative, and scholarly digital editions of early Arabic periodicals
I am building the first corpus of digital scholarly editions of early Arabic periodicals worldwide with my project “Open Arabic Periodical Editions” (OpenArabicPE) since 2015 and with the support of interns, students, and volunteers. OpenArabicPE provides a framework for bootstrapping open, collaborative, and sustainable editions of textual cultural heritage with the affordances of the Global South. Editions, tools, and workflows are openly available online for unrestrained re-use. The resulting TEI/XML-encoded corpus currently comprises 6 periodicals from Baghdad, Beirut, Cairo, and Damascus with 630 issues and c.7 million words.
